CRASH COURSE 101

Blessing or curse?

Facing and dealing with setbacks is a part of life for all of us. Sometimes we think we’re ready to let go for the world but the universe decides to play mind games

“When things fall apart, the broken pieces allow all sort of things to enter, and one of them is the presence of God.”- Shauna Niequist

Through the course of time, I have realized that people cope with setbacks in different ways and some handle it way better than others.

There are those who restrict their attention to the problems (remove the presage and find solutions) and don’t let other activities get in the way. If they need help, they get it without distraction from what they need to do.[Problem-focused ones]

There are those who cope by talking through the experience with supportive others. Through these conversations, they are able to seek new perspectives, correct incorrect perceptions and find new insights.[ Emotion-focused ones]

There are those who cope better by avoiding the situation, they shut out their feelings. Avoidance is the only coping method for a prolonged period of time. They find all sorts of ways to distract themselves from what needs to be done.[ Avoidant ones]

Though these categories are clear and defined, there is no solid formula to deal with setbacks but an individual approach. I can however give you some tips on dealing with setbacks.

Easy tips for setbacks

•Recognize it – No one is immune to setbacks. Acknowledge that through the tough times, miracles happen and we flourish on the other side. We are capable of doing amazing things and even more if we can grow through our challenges.

•Eliminate blame – Moving forward is much healthier than trying to blame someone or something for a setback that is irrevocable.

•Access your spirituality – Spirituality can sustain us in times of uncertainty and difficulty. It reminds us that we are a gift and have gifts to offer the world. Focusing on this allows us to see beyond this setback and find a purpose for it. “God hasn’t invited us into a disorderly, unkempt life but into something holy and beautiful – as beautiful on the inside as the outside.[1 Thessalonians 4:7 MSG]

•Give yourself time – Wounds need to heal, broken hearts need to mend. Impatience only makes them harder and longer than they need to be. Allow the movement of time push you through it. Time does heal !
